The Tryout Process

Due to limited practice time and court availability, we unfortunately cannot accept everyone who demonstrates interest in BCT. Tryouts, held every fall as well as in the spring based on roster changes, offer a structured, fair opportunity for every student to showcase their tennis potential.

While the process is long and historically competitive, we encourage you to give it a shot—you’ll gain exposure to the other tennis players on campus and form connections to carry into the semester.

All grades are welcome. Date and time TBA.

Men’s and women’s tryouts run separately, but they follow the same format:

1. Observed Practice

Over several days, we evaluate every applicant (typically 80+ men and 30-40 women) based on their skill and attitude.

2. Callbacks

We will ask around half of the applicants to return for a second practice with more structured point-play.

3. Match Play Group

A final group of 15-20 men and 15-20 women will have two weeks to play several matches in a round-robin style. We will then select 6-10 men and 6-10 women to join BCT after considering their skill, match results, and commitment.

Ultimately, we are only capable of accepting a small group of experienced players who will contribute to our competitive goals, but we remain committed to the broader tennis community at Brown. We will offer resources and playing opportunities throughout the year, including several intramural tournaments, to ensure that every student can get out on the court.
